Reva stood admiring the picture hanging above a wooden counter at Girl’s hostel. That was it! That was the place she wanted to go all her life but never could. This was the place she wanted her dream house to be, overlooking the sunset, with its various pinkish orange hues illuminating the sky and the pale lake. “What a beautiful lake..”, She thought. She imagined herself standing at the wooden and breathing in the aura of the place, amidst the gushes of cool wind playing with her open hair, away from the rut of life. She stood with her eyes closed, as tears trickled down her pale cheeks.
“Tring-tring, Tring-tring”, sudden ringing of the telephone kept on the table top brought her back into reality. The loud noise irked her to the core and she looked here and there wishing someone to come and receive the call. When no one came into the sight, Reva reluctantly picked it up, still teary eyed. Before could muster a ‘hello’ in a normal tone, a scratchy and hoarse voice from the other end began speaking, almost in whispers, as if for her ears, only her ears..
search of skin,
color no matter,
brighter or darker,
tell no one,
I will take someone,
– ghost, me!”
“Ahh! You are a ghost too!! Thank god, thank god. Someone to help me out of this. But how do you takeover someone else’s body? I’m new to all this, you see.” , the excitement in Reva’s voice was obvious.
“You- you..are not afraid?!” The voice thundered in same scratchy tone, but this time using all its strength to speak.
Oblivious to the query, Reva was lost in her own excitement, “How did you dial a number? I can’t remember anyone’s number since I woke up”, She had a lot of questions. “And do your fingers work as before? Mine don’t seem to be…. ” Reva was complaining now, looking at her palm. There was no reply from the other side. “Hello, heelloo..are you listening?”, Reva was confused at the sudden silence.
She peeked in from the landline’s receiver and saw a young lad, probably in his early twenties, standing by the support of a wooden counter and drawing long breaths. He was trying to remain steady by keeping his hand on the table for support. The receiver of his telephone was dangling down the length of the table. Why was he so spooked out?
She struggled out of the receiver saying, “Wohoo! What happened?”
Then seeing her own new feat, commented, “How was that, huh? I did it for the first time…it was so easy!” She was gushing with happiness and pride, quite unaware of the lad’s condition. His eyes were wide open, as if they would come out any second. His mouth had gone dry, his face deathly pale while his whole body was shivering with fear. What had he just seen?
His grip on the table top could no longer support his legs gone limp. Soon enough, he fainted and fell down with a thud.
He opened his eyes after some time, only to see a pair of bloodshot eyes staring at him over his head. “Aaaah!” he let out a shriek and tried to get up and sprint out of the room but a sturdy force around his neck kept him down.
“Are you a human?” the voice bellowed.
Rahul, as was his earthly name, was a little short of wetting his pants when a brain wave struck him, quite thankfully.
“Of Course, not..”, He mustered up courage and got up slowly, as he sensed the grip around his neck loosening. He faced the lady ghost now. Reva looked at him with her big black curious eyes, akin to that of an innocent child and whispered as of it was a big secret, “Did take over him them?”, She asked, pointing to the male body which stood in front of her.
Our supposed ghost had his first, face to face encounter with a really beautiful lady.’Only if she wasn’t a ghost’, He thought and kept looking at her when a sudden thundering diverted his attention. Reva had just repeated her question. “Yes, Of course”, He answered again, “But I should leave now, my renting time is going to be up soon”. He pointed to his body and rushed towards the door. Reva followed him and blocked the exit. “Not so fast Mister. You are to tell me first from where you rent these human bodies.”, she said calmly.
This time, Rahul saw his doom right in front of him, instead of a pretty ghost. He looked left and right and saw the glass windows as his potential escape route. He did not care if he was on the first floor, he aimed to hold onto the tree branch outside the window and climb down. It was a different story that he did not know how to do it. But he had a plan for sure!
He turned and ran to his right, only to find the lady ghost floating along. He ran to the opposite end next, circled the bed, tried climbing over the table, fell by tangling his leg with the landline’s dangling receiver and landed straight on the bean bag kept next to the wooden counter.Though he fell flat on his face, he could sense the paranormal force still floating around him. He looked up, dejected and saw the lady smiling at him. “I have not had such fun in weeks!” she exclaimed, beaming.
Rahul realized this was a good sign and decided to avail his only chance. “Great! Let’s be friends then”, he offered.
“But I have understood now that you are a human .” Reva’s face drooped as she stated a fact.
“So I should leave, right?” he asked in a puppy tone, cursing the moment he had thought of playing a prank on his college’s hostel girls.
“No, wait. We can be friends.”, She said offering a hand for help. He nervously took it and got up.
“You can rent me your body sometimes and we’ll have a lot of fun together”, she said, smiling.
“But I AM a guy..!” he tried to reason, as he was being dragged out of the room by shoulders.
“So what? I’m an open-minded 21st century ghost. I don’t believe in this narrow-minded crap”, she replied soothingly.
“By the way, I’m Reva”, She announced, coming in front of him. Rahul had just found a friend for life and beyond!
Author’s note: This story is in response to the Incredible Blogger Marathon Challenge #06 – The Mass Media Challenge. I was supplied with a word ‘Telephone’, the ghostly ‘poem’ Rahul recites to Reva in their first conversation and a ‘picture’ of the beautiful lake depicted above.
The challenge is hence complete and here goes the completion logo:
