Once upon a time, there was a girl called Hargun. For quite some time, she had been observing how the taste of water was going a bit bitter at some people’s homes. ‘This is due to new and improved water filtration technology’ , she was told. Then one day she saw this new technology water filter at her grandma’s. Excited, she held a glass to have some water for herself. To her surprise, as her glass filled, some amount of water drained from a reject water pipe attached to the filter. Curious, she went up to her grandma and asked her about it. ‘This is how it works, darling. This water you see here, its waste water and unfit to drink.’,her grandma explained. Years passed ,and each time she went over to her grandma’s, she would see a lot of ‘waste’ water going down the drain. Unable to bear this sheer wastage of water, she talked to her grandma about it. By this time, her grandma too was troubled by the large quantities of water being discarded. So, a solution was thought up. The wise granny would let the pipe drain into a utensil instead of the sink. The water thus collected was used for watering plants or cleaning purposes. Still, they were unable to save whole of it, her grandma being the only lady managing the household while others were caught up in the mad race against time. Now Fast forward to the year ‘2015’.
Little Hargun has grown up, and she feels strongly not just about saving water, but to spread awareness about the issue. Water, to her is the elixir of life. She does her best to do conserve all the water she can at her home, but what about the millions of other families ? Do they give their share in solving the ever increasing problem of water shortage? All apart, I don’t wish to elaborate on the dozens of ways by which you could possibly save water. I want you to recognize this particular issue, understand it ,analyze its implications and then decide if its worth your concern and if it is, what can you possibly do to mitigate the problem. So let me tell you the facts straight. The ‘REVERSE OSMOSIS’ water purifiers work by dividing the incoming water into two streams – purified water stream and the reject water stream in which all the impurities that were in the original water are rejected. But In order to purify, say a litre of water, these purifiers reject a high percentage (around 80% of water for most inefficient purifiers) and only 20% is recovered. Imagine a colony of 400 households, and assume each household is using RO system for consuming 50 litres water per day, the daily wastage will be to the tune of 20,000 litres! Since the RO purifiers are designed for treating even brackish water, these perform poorly in normal household conditions. This is because usual supply of water we get is pretreated fresh water from the municipality, it is largely usable with minimum filtration. So, Is there a solution to the issue? In my quest for an answer, I came across a water filter by renowed company claiming 0% water wastage. On delving deeper, I got to know it had a internal water tank which instead of rejecting the waste water stream, stored it. So ultimately, we need to do what my grandma does-use it for cleaning the utensils or the floors to watering the plants. It doesn’t matter if it’s the storage tank or the water is collected directly from reject water pipe. And if you worry about the safety of using this water in the household chores, fret not. They have been actually using it for years. Now,I would feel satisfied if after reading this, you actually give your support to the cause, or help your household members who might be making efforts to save the water from going down the drain. I wouldn’t say discontinue use of RO purifiers or make you count its other disadvantages, that’s surely not my objective. I just want your apathy, awareness and a zeal to prevent this cause from magnifying the already existing problem of water shortage. Start small with your own home. Spread the word to your neighbors, friends, and peers.Refrain from being one of those urban citizens who don’t have the time to do something good or simply don’t care. Show your worth to the world by doing something for our mother nature, the humanity, our nation, our planet.
Its small things citizens do, which make the difference-let your little thing be saving water.
Good job Hargun! We people are wasting water in hundreds of ways and it often requires little efforts and being self responsible to overcome the loss. The simplest example of this would be turning off the taps of water properly. It takes minimal efforts but people keep ignoring. I guess, spreading awareness would help but that too will require people to understand the importance of every drop of water. Let’s just hope for the best.

Yes, couldn’t agree more.
Its requires simple gestures on our part, but as you said, many people keep ignoring. This is particularly what I aimed to target. Unless and until they understand the importance of water and the current problem of water shortage there wouldn’t be any Change. But just understanding and knowing about the issue is not enough. What we need is inner motivation to work towards it. We need a desire in people’s mind to work for the cause which would bring results in the long run. instruction and advises wouldn’t .

Very thoughtful! I am glad you did that since your childhood. We still prefer boiled water at home and earthen pot during summer.
Good initiative.. 🙂

I must say water from earthen pot is way better than the one chilled in fridge. Its Perfect on temperature – neither very cold nor warm. And its great that there’s no water wastage through water purifiers at home.
Thanks a lot for your support!

Excellent point Hargun. I live in the mountains, so we enjoy natural water. But I always make a point to not waste water. Because I think a time will come when the individual capable of affording fresh water and fresh food shall be considered richest.
I liked the phrase mad race against time.
Thanks & regards,

Moreover, I’m elated to know that you recognise and fulfill your responsibility towards saving water. I wish you good luck in your initiative.
PS: You are very lucky to have access to fresh mountain water. It really is the real elixir!

Very strong post. I read in newspaper that by 2025, India will face scarcity of water and it scares me. Just in 10 years, situation will be dire. Hope such small things, makes living easy for all of us.

I’m terrified of the same too, I can’t even think of facing a situation like that. That’s precisely why I want people recognize the issue and start giving whatever they can to the cause. And Yes, such small gestures can lead to big fruitful results if done diligently. Remember the saying- boond boond sagar bharta hai? 🙂
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will make your earnest efforts towards saving water whenever you can 🙂

Yes Hargun, I will do my best 🙂 Yes, boond boond se sagar banta hai 😀 necessity is the mother of invention and hopefully these dire situations will bring some sense to the educated gawaar, who don’t know the value of Nature. We forget that, Ample doesn’t mean inexhaustible. Thanks for writing on such an urgent topic 🙂

I have been talking about this for long and never thought of spreading it here in WP.. That was a great post..
And we do use big cans to hold the water that’s rejected as waste and since its too salty we use it for everything except consumption..
Glad to know that the right steps are being initiated.. Kudos.. 🙂

Nice post… actually after seeing how RO filters waste water, and not liking the taste (yes water has taste, although Chemistry says it is a colourless, tasteless liquid 😛 ) I personally prefer using a simple storage filter like PurIt. When we were young, we used to drink any water and not feel sick. Sometimes, I feel all this is more of a marketing gimmick to ensure that everyone has these gadgets at home and you are made to feel inadequate as a household if you do not have them.
Normal tap water is still used by millions in India. While there are few instances of water-borne diseases entering into the drinking system, by and large, water from the tap is safe to drink. And before you dismiss me as an idiot (I am that, but not in this case), my grad and post-grad are in the field of ecology and environmental science :D, so I’m not just talking off the top of my hat ….

True that! Sometimes consumers succumb to ‘better safe than sorry’ marketing bait if the water purifier industry. And yes, although tasteless, water does have a taste which has changed a lot with time. Even I don’t like that.
Also, I’m glad to meet a person with post grad in ecology and env science.
Thanks a lot for a meaningful comment.

This is a very sensible post Hargun and a very alarming one too. Although I did see a lot water go down the drain, I never associated this importance to it. It is time to think of effective ways of putting this water to use :).. Atleast groundwater storage can be much better than simply throwing it down the drain.
Another approach can be a high infrastructure one, maybe send purified water instead. But again that depends on the water supply agencies which have a long way to get there. For now, the above ideas are really good to start on 🙂

Couldn’t agree more. Getting Purified water through the taps is a distant dream for now. And the need for safe drinking water necessitates water purifiers. So, with the number of RO purifiers on the rise, we do need to find an immediate solution to curb the water wastage.
I’m glad you are thinking of putting this water to use. I wish you all the success in your efforts. Thanks a lot for the support 🙂

It is indeed an amazing thought and if people do take care then much of waste can be saved….its all about people getting aware of the fact that water is not supposed to be wasted but instead should be utilised and made use of for no matter what purpose which will in turn save the good water….any saving of water will be a great effort from our ends….i agree with whatever you have written above and have started practicing the same at my home too…nice thought…keep it up…good job!!! – Yogesh – ygoel.blogspot.com
